Pandemic in Christmas
In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, how does one enjoy Christmas this year?
This is most likely one of the few times in modern history when we are urged to enjoy Christmas in its purest form, in its simplicity.
We are preoccupied with rules on how to enjoy Christmas this year– with just members of the family who live in the same household, to continue wearing masks, to observe social separation, or to wash hands frequently– due to the attention on the Covid virus. For our mutual security and safety, we are being prevented from visiting one another. This year, we won't be able to experience the normal Christmas joy and mirth that we have come to expect.
Covid, on the other hand, should not detract from our Christmas celebrations! This season, let us spread even more hope, peace, joy, and love! And it is here that I am reminded of our Savior's birth. The Christmas story is a straightforward one. Only his mother and father were present when our Lord and Savior was born in a manger. A shepherd, a few animals, and the three magi were among his visitors. It's a heartfelt reminder of the season's inherent meaning. This year has been challenging for all of us, but we remain hopeful. God is with us, has always been with us, and will always be with us, despite all of the chaos and fear that the pandemic has brought. The light of the world is Jesus!
May we continue to make room in our hearts for the infant Jesus, that our lives reflect Christ's presence, and that our homes exude God's peace. We will all get through this crisis together if we have a lot of faith, hope, and love.
